We're Back in Business, Girls!

Well, I'm happy to say that the D83 Book Club is back in business! We met at Carol Mola's house last Friday, December 13th to talk about the book Home Safe by Elizabeth Berg. I would say the general feeling was that the book was okay, nothing to get too excited about, but a good, quick read and not too difficult. Most club members have enjoyed Berg's previous books, but didn't think this was her best.

We ordered pizza and chatted....catching up on kids and jobs. Our next meeting is after the holidays, Friday, January 8th at Bonnie Warner's house in Lombard. We had a tough time choosing a book and decided on Maynard and Jennica by Rudolph Delson. Hope to see everyone there.

Summer is Upon Us!

Happy Summer, Reading Friends!

Our latest Book Club meeting took place on Monday, June 22nd at Alfie's in Glen Ellyn. Carol C, Loretta, Judy Shaefer, Joan Lizik, Lynn Shaber and myself met and talked about All We Ever Wanted Was Everything. The consensus was that the book basically stunk. We all had trouble identifying with the characters and the problems they faced. To be honest, I never finished the book and probably won't...it just doesn't appeal to me.

Our next meeting will be Monday, August 3rd. We're reading Starvation Lake by Bryan Gruley this time...it is a mystery...something different! We'll meet at the Country House in Lisle at 5:30. The book is available in paperback. I found it at Barnes and Noble last night. Other titles that came up for discussion were: Olive Kitteridge, The Road, A Reliable Wife, The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting. In the meantime, stay cool...it is going to be 95 today, so jump in the pool or sit in front of the air conditioning.

Continuing Conversations

Happy St. Patty's Day!

Just thought I'd post some information from last night's D83 Book Club meeting.  We discussed The Shack by William P. Young and it was interesting to hear what everyone had to say.  The reviews were mixed.  I, for one, didn't enjoy the book at all, but after listening to the conversation, I feel that I may have been  too literal when reading.  Most seemed to like the book and found Young's depiction of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit interesting.

News from the group:  Carol C. is retiring this year.  She passed around a lovely picture of her four grandchildren together and I must say, they're a good looking group!  Carol M. is busy, busy, busy with two teenagers.  Kathy is anxiously awaiting the birth of her first grandchild due at the end of the month.  She promised that she'll keep us in the loop.  Judy S, we miss you! Please stay in touch and we'll keep you updated about the group.

Our next book is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Schaffer.  It comes highly recommended from Carol C...her other book club read it and she enjoyed it very much. She even said that she'd read it again!  We'll meet at Alfie's on Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn, on Monday, May 4th at 5:00.  So far the two meetings we've had in the new year have been well attended, it seems that the format is working for most people.

I look forward to seeing everyone in May and until then, enjoy the beginning of warm weather! (Finally!)

Book Club

Hello Everyone,
Hope the holidays were restful and rejuvinating! So far we have 7 people committed to Feb. 4th, so we're on! I've heard from Carol C, Carol M, Kathy, Kelly, Sue, Loretta and me! If you're at MMS, I do have a copy of Dewey which a student is using right now, but will probably have it back sometime next week, so ask me to borrow it.

If you haven't done so, check out my blog and post a comment...anything...what you've been reading, how your holidays were...suggestions for books...

See you all soon,

Barb

D83 Book Club

Hello Everyone,
Welcome to the new and updated D83 Book Club blog. Some of our past members are missing the company and stimulating conversations we had, so we've decided to start a new and improved club in 2009.

We will meet six times in 2009, January, March, May, July, September and November. The meetings will be toward the end of those months on a Thursday evening. The January meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, January 29th at Panera in Elmhurst, 5:00 pm. The plan is to eat, talk and just catch up. Hopefully, they'll let us stay as long as we want! The book title is Dewey: The Small Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron.

The purpose of this blog is to keep everyone updated, to chat, and to share ideas about books you've read. I invite you to post comments here. Any suggestions for books? Post them in the comments section and I'll move your ideas to a more permanent spot on the blog. Doesn't this sound like fun? I hope you're up for it.

See you in January!
